Taking care of Shaker boxes, trays and carriers
It’s important to care of your Shaker box, tray or carrier in a manner that will maintain the health of the finish and preserve its beautiful appearance.
For trays, it is recommended that you wipe them clean after each use. After cleaning with a damp cloth, buff the tray dry with a soft towel. Since these are wood products, it is not recommended to submerge them in water – and they are definitely not dishwasher safe. Damp cloth, buff dry … nothing more.
All of our products are finished with a sealer and then two coats of polyurethane and oil, followed by a coat of paste wax. It is recommended that the product get a fresh coat of wax every 10 years or so. The best type of wax to use is BWC Company Bowling Alley Wax. It can be purchased at your local hardware store or from All Things Shaker.
I admit that I’ve waited up to 20 years to re-wax some of my personal boxes but the finish will maintain its luster better with an occasional application of wax.
Cherry wood products
For products made with cherry wood, the finish will darken when exposed to the sun. This is natural and relatively unavoidable. In some cases, “staining” will occur when the product receives uneven exposure to the sun. If that happens, place the product in bright, even sunlight for several days to a week. The “staining” or “suntan” will be reduced and possibly eliminated.
